Acer has outed its latest two Android smartphones, the beTouch E120 and beTouch E130, though disappointingly they both run Android 1.6 Donut. The Acer beTouch E120 has a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen while the Acer beTouch E130 has a 2.6-inch QVGA touchscreen and a QWERTY keybaord; both have a 3.2-megapixel camera, dualband 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth.

There’s also a microSD card slot, GPS, an FM radio, accelerometer and digital compass, together with the usual suite of Google apps. We’re not expecting dramatic performance, however, thanks to the 416MHz processor. The beTouch E120 will drop in mid-July 2010, while the beTouch E130 will follow in August 2010. No word on pricing at this stage.

Acer beTouch E120 and beTouch E130 are intended for those who want to get their hands on the best technologies, but without having to compromise their individuality. Whether you are a traditionalist or always on the cutting edge, the beTouch line can satisfy your smartphone cravings!

The beTouch E120 is a device that combines a 2.8” touchscreen with 5-way navi key for incomparable usability. Ideal for beginners just getting into the world of intelligent phones and looking for a “smartphone experience” at an affordable price.

The beTouch E130 stands out for its thin format and sophisticated design. An example of style and functionality: compact, linear, and professional. Even its dimensions are convenient – at just 11.5mm and 109 gr, it is perfect for practically any pocket.

Conceived for those who want to enter the fantastic world of touchscreens but without giving up on the convenience of a traditional keyboard. In fact, under the 2.6” screen, the beTouch E130 hides a full QWERTY keyboard. The keys have been sized and positioned to allow maximum comfort, guaranteeing precision in typing: texting, or writing emails will be even easier and faster.

Browsing will be fast and fluid: the beTouch E130 is the perfect device to manage professional and personal email accounts at the same time with readable attachments. It’s compatible with all popular email services as well as Microsoft Exchange servers (through Roadsync). And to be always updated it offers the possibility to synchronize your contacts to the web (through Google Contact Sync).

Packed with Facebook, Twidroid and Google applications it will assure users to easily post and share their messages, pictures or music to the web. It will be available in black or white from August 2010.

Apple’s iMovie ‘09 is more accessible and comprehensive than iMovie ‘08–and impressive right out of the box. The one thing not in the box is a user’s guide, and that’s where this book comes in. You’ll make the most out of the applications if you get help from the experts. iMovie ‘09 and iDVD: The Missing Manual explains everything you need to know to turn raw digital footage into high quality film.

Stabilizing Shaky Footage
By David Pogue and Aaron Miller Not every piece of video needs fancy effects. In fact, most video is probably better without a Dream filter and Picture-in-Picture. The unadulterated stuff straight from your camera usually looks best.

In fact, if your footage needs any help at all, it’s probably in the cameraman department. Don’t take this personally. Handheld shots, the most common kind of home video, are notoriously unstable, and that’s an instant giveaway that you’re an amateur. You can have the hands of a surgeon and still end up with shaky footage.

This is true even with all the newfangled image stabilization technology that comes in the latest cameras. Don’t give up (and don’t resort to carrying a tripod everywhere). iMovie ’09 can stabilize your video after the fact, using one of its most amazing new features.

Video Stabilization
iMovie has powers that leave other “beginner” video-editing programs panting with envy. It’s filled with tools that have historically been found only in professional editing programs. iMovie’s stabilization feature, for example, is inherited from Apple’s $1,000 Final Cut Pro software.

It works by analyzing every single frame in a clip, recognizing the changes in both camera position (movement up, down, left, or right) and camera rotation. Once it figures that bit out, it knows how to slide and rotate your clips to iron out the shakes. Unfortunately, this sort of analysis takes a very long time—roughly ten minutes for every minute of video (more or less depending on your Mac’s speed).

The results, however, are worth it. The stabilization feature works absolute magic on most jerky, bumpy handheld footage. It works so well, in fact, that it can look positively creepy, as though you were floating along on a magic carpet. Fortunately, there’s a slider that lets you control how much stabilizing goes on.

Information retrieval in the age of Internet search engines has become part of ordinary discourse and everyday practice: “Google” is a verb in common usage. Thus far, more attention has been given to practical understanding of information retrieval than to a full theoretical account. In Human Information Retrieval, Julian Warner offers a transformative overview of information retrieval, synthesizing theories from different disciplines (information and computer science, librarianship and indexing, and information society discourse) and incorporating such disparate systems as WorldCat and Google into a single, robust theoretical framework. There is a need for such a theoretical treatment, he argues, one that reveals the structure and underlying patterns of this complex field while remaining congruent with everyday practice.

Warner presents a labor theoretic approach to information retrieval, building on his previously formulated distinction between semantic and syntactic mental labor, arguing that the description and search labor of information retrieval can be understood as both semantic and syntactic in character.

Warner’s information science approach is rooted in the humanities and the social sciences but informed by an understanding of information technology and information theory. The chapters offer a progressive exposition of the topic, with illustrative examples to explain the concepts presented. Neither narrowly practical nor largely speculative, Human Information Retrieval meets the contemporary need for a broader treatment of information and information systems.

Jonathan Littman takes us into the mind of Kevin Mitnick, cyberspace’s most wanted hacker. Drawing on over fifty hours of phone conversations with Mitnick on the run, Littman reveals Mitnick’s double life; his narrow escapes; his new identities; his mastery of “social engineering”; his obsession with revenge. The electronic adventure story that emerges reads like a spy thriller, but also raises questions about Internet security and tensions between constitutional rights of privacy and law enforcement. A good companion piece to the other side of the story, Tsutomu Shimomura’s book Takedown.

The Fugitive Game introduces Kevin Mitnick moments before the fugitive hacker surrenders himself to FBI agents who have located him with the help of the so-called cybersleuth, Tsutomu Shimomura. The prologue to Jonathan Littman’s book kicks off with the epic climax that came to tantalize movie producers and video game designers and launch magazine covers worldwide.

However, this is not another version of Takedown. The Fugitive Game is a compelling, journalistic look at the events that led up to the capture of Kevin Mitnick, and no portion of the folklore surrounding the case is left untouched by the book’s critical eye. The real gold of this volume comes from the nearly 200 pages of conversations with Kevin Mitnick himself, most of which were transcribed while he was fleeing from the law.

Over the course of Mitnick’s flight from justice, Littman documents and examines the public transformation of Mitnick into Public Enemy Number One, mostly through the efforts of the New York Times writer John Markoff. Markoff’s involvement in the eventual capture of Mitnick by Shimomura is also scrutinized at length.

Littman even questions the now-legendary Christmas Day break-in of Shimomura’s computer, citing reports that the “IP spoofing technique,” which Markoff claimed was so ingenious, was in fact a well-known method of gaining access to systems for years. This is a brilliant look at a compelling individual and also the manufacturing of media events and the inept efforts of law enforcement to prepare for the next wave of high-tech crime.
